水位控制装置的设计方法多样, 用得最多的方法有4种, 液位开关即浮力法、浮力重力法、浮力磁力法和传感器电路法。浮力法是利用浮体监测水位, 用浮体连杆作用于开关而使监控系统获取水位信息; 浮力重力法是用浮体监测水位,用滑轮钢丝绳牵动的重砣作用于微动开关而使监控系统获取水位信息; 浮力磁力法是通过浮体监测水位, 用装于浮体上的磁铁作用于干簧管而使监控系统获取水位信号;   
目前国内外已有很多水位智能控制的装置, 其中发展最多的是在水利水电工程及工厂的大型液体容器中使用的监控设备,液位开关 这些设备大都是用计算机进行监控且都要配以专门的监护人员, 而且设备昂贵、安装维护困难; 此外,液位开关 家庭和工厂的水塔及一些小型的家用设备(如热水器等) 也有此类装置, 但往往设备复杂、液位开关稳定性不高且装配困难, 所以并未得到广泛的使用。 传感器电路法是用传感器对水位进行监测, 并将水位信息反馈到电路中, 电路做出反应, 从而达到监控的目的。
